Controlling Life-Threatening Bleeding & Tourniquet Use

This Red Cross training class prepares participants to respond confidently and effectively in emergencies involving severe bleeding. The course covers how to recognize life-threatening bleeding, apply direct pressure, pack wounds, and correctly use a tourniquet. Participants will gain practical, hands-on experience in bleeding control techniques that can help save lives in the critical moments before emergency responders arrive. A Red Cross certificate will be provided on successful completion of the class.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the difference between minor and life-threatening bleeding.
  • Recognize the signs of severe bleeding and the need for immediate action.
  • Learn and demonstrate the correct method for applying direct pressure to a wound.
  • Understand the use and limitations of wound packing.
  • Identify when and how to apply a tourniquet safely and effectively.
  • Practice hands-on application of commercial tourniquets.
  • Learn steps for monitoring the injured person and communicating with emergency services.
  • Understand the importance of acting quickly and confidently in bleeding emergencies.
  • Review Good Samaritan protections and legal considerations for responders.
